Does anyone know if you have to file a tax return if you receive benefits from SSI?

tax return
She She asked:

I have quite a few friends that receive benefits from SSI (supplemental security income) from Social Security and they never file a tax return. This year, with the stimulus, people want to get that $300-600.00, so they will have to file a tax return. Receiving about $7400 a year, would there be any liability?

they where supposed to file there taxes every year. so if they do it now they well be caught up on and well have more trouble then they hope for.

My understanding is that SSI benefits do not qualify you for the stimulus rebate…

Go to & read the info there. The website doesn’t mention a Stymulus Rebate being available for those on SSI, but if a person is on SS Disablity, they must fill out the “1040- A” form in a couple places, & mail it in, in order to receive the $300 rebate.

If you go to the IRS home page and look up SSI it says in black and white …Supplemental Security Income (SSI) does not count as qualifying income for the stimulus payment. I have been on SSI for 2 years and i don’t file taxes i was never told to also..So let me know..My g/f thought i could get the money to i told her no and her friend filed and said she is getting it she has not worked for 4 years but in the past she worked so she would be drawing off her old jobs as me i have not worked in 13 plus years so i dont know if i can get it

If their only income is SSi, they don’t have to file taxes and they don’t get the stimulus rebate

No, SSI isn’t taxable or reportable. And normally people with just social security wouldn’t have to file either.

SSI isn’t eligible income for the stimulus payment, so if someone’s only income is SSI there is no reason to file. Social security is eligible income, so if someone has at least $3000 in social security income, they should file this year to be eligible for the $300 stimulus payment.
